The Whispers in the Wild watercolour print captures a hidden, secret world of Australian bushland. Flowing fern fronds, dense undergrowth, and towering gum trees create a rich, layered composition. I painted this piece in my garden studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW, inspired by a walk to our backyard gully.
Importantly, this artwork was created using the negative painting technique. I layered successive washes of transparent watercolour while preserving highlights. Through this method, the green tree snake, tree frog, and regent bowerbird subtly emerge from the fern foliage. As a result, the print reveals a sense of mystery and discovery, drawing the viewer into the overgrown jungle. In this way, light appears to dance through the leaves and plants, adding movement and depth.
