Flannel Flower 1 – Australian Native Watercolour Print

The Flannel Flower 1 watercolour print celebrates one of Australia’s most loved wildflowers. Found along the east coast, the flannel flower is known for its soft, velvety petals and gentle beauty. I painted this piece by hand in my garden studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW, surrounded by the same coastal bushland that inspires much of my artwork.

This delicate piece captures the calm, natural charm of the flannel flower in light, transparent watercolour layers. It’s perfect for anyone who loves Australian native blooms or wants to bring a little nature and warmth into their home.

Importantly, this artwork was created using the negative painting technique, a process that involves building up successive layers of transparent colour while carefully preserving the white of the flowers. Through this method, I guide the viewer’s eye across the soft forms of each petal. As a result, the flannel flowers appear to glow from within. In this way, the technique adds both light and quiet depth, reflecting the delicacy of the bloom itself. This method gives the piece a quiet depth and a luminous quality that reflects the softness of the flower itself.
