Flannel Flower 1 –
Australian Native Watercolour Print
Flannel Flower 1 is a hand-painted watercolour print celebrating one of Australia’s most loved wildflowers. Found along the east coast, the flannel flower is known for its soft, velvety petals and gentle beauty. I painted this piece by hand in my garden studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW, surrounded by the same coastal bushland that inspires much of my artwork.
This delicate artwork captures the calm, natural charm of the flannel flower through light, transparent watercolour layers. It’s perfect for anyone who loves Australian native blooms or wants to bring a little nature and warmth into their home.
Flannel Flower 1 painting process & technique
This piece was created using the negative painting technique, a method where the subject emerges by painting around it rather than directly on it. I built each bloom through successive layers of transparent colour while carefully preserving the whites of the flowers.
The technique guides the viewer’s eye across the soft forms of each petal, giving the flannel flowers a luminous, glowing quality. The layers also add quiet depth, reflecting the delicacy of these coastal blooms in a natural, modern way.
Styling ideas & pairing suggestions
Flannel Flower 1 is part of my Australian Flora series, which explores native flowers in gentle, contemporary compositions. It pairs beautifully with Blue Bees and Gum Trees creating a harmonious, nature-inspired set.
