From Watercolour to Patterns: My Artistic Evolution post thumbnail image

As a fine artist, my journey has always been rooted in painting nature’s beauty with watercolours. But one serendipitous moment shifted my creative path: discovering a Ripskirt. The vibrant colours and flowing patterns caught my eye. As I examined it closely, I realized it was created by watercolour art, just like my own work! That moment sparked a new dream. I wanted to learn surface pattern design. My goal was to turn my watercolour art into complex patterns.

A Year of Learning and Growth

Inspired by that discovery, I embarked on a year-long adventure to master the art of surface design and repeat patterns. While I’m still on this journey, it has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned to transform my hand-painted watercolour motifs into seamless patterns. These patterns can adorn stationery, fabric, homeware, wallpaper, and more.

Watercolour Art to Repeat Pattern Processes

The process wasn’t without challenges. Learning digital tools like Procreate felt daunting at first, but I persevered. Each new design taught me something valuable about combining art and functionality. Now, I have a growing portfolio of surface pattern designs. These include collections inspired by Australian flora. My travels also inspired collections, featuring the Mediterranean blues of my recent Greek Islands trip.

Bringing Art to Everyday Life

One of the most exciting aspects of surface pattern design is seeing how my artwork can enhance everyday items. From wearable fashion to home decor, my goal is to bring a fresh, handmade touch to people’s lives. My designs are versatile, elegant, and rooted in the natural beauty that inspires all my work.

Looking Ahead

While I’m proud of how far I’ve come, this is just the beginning. My journey into surface pattern design has already led to opportunities to send my collections to potential licensees. I’m eager to expand my skills. I want to refine my techniques. I aim to create patterns that resonate with nature lovers and art enthusiasts alike.

If you’ve ever wondered about combining fine art with functional design, I encourage you to explore surface pattern design. It’s a beautiful way to expand your artistic horizons and share your creativity with the world. Watch this space as my portfolio grows.
