Blue Bees and Gum Trees
Australian Native Watercolour Print
Blue Bees and Gum Trees is a hand-painted watercolour print celebrating the gentle beauty of Australian native flora and fauna. It features flowing gum leaves, soft blossoms, and a native blue-banded bee. I painted it in my garden studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW, and I was inspired by the gentle movement of leaves in a summer breeze. As a result, this piece captures the harmony and light of our unique bushland.
This artwork brings both energy and calm into your home. It is perfect for anyone who loves native flowers, wildlife, or nature-inspired art.
Blue Bees and Gum Trees painting process & technique
I created this piece using the negative painting technique. I applied layers of transparent watercolour one after another, while carefully preserving the light areas of the leaves and blossoms. Then, depth, shadows, and movement began to emerge. This means the blue-banded bee appears alive, hovering delicately among the foliage. The sunlight seems to dance across the gum trees, giving the painting a lively yet serene feel.
Styling ideas & pairing suggestions
Part of the Australian Flora series, Blue Bees and Gum Trees pairs beautifully with Flannel Flower 1 or the Australian Blossom 2026 Calendar. Together, they create a harmonious collection of native botanical artworks. You can display them alone or mix them with other nature-inspired prints for a calm, uplifting atmosphere.
