The Blue Bees and Gum Trees watercolour print celebrates the intricate beauty of Australian native flora and fauna. Featuring flowing gum leaves, soft blossom, and a native blue-banded bee, this hand-painted piece captures the harmony and light of our unique bushland. I painted it in my garden studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW, inspired by the gentle movement of leaves in a summer breeze.
Importantly, this artwork was created using the negative painting technique, where successive layers of transparent watercolour are carefully applied while preserving the light areas of the leaves and blossoms. Through this method, I built depth, shadows, and a sense of movement, giving the impression of sunlight dancing across the gum trees. As a result, the blue-banded bee appears alive, hovering delicately among the foliage. In this way, the painting brings both energy and serenity into your space.
This print is part of my Australian Flora series, exploring native flowers and fauna in soft, modern compositions. You might also enjoy Flannel Flower 1 or the Australian Blossom 2026 Calendar, which pair beautifully with this piece to create a harmonious native botanical collection.
