The Macrocarpa Red watercolour print captures the bold, dramatic beauty of a large macrocarpa blossom. Its rich red petals glow against an earthy background, creating a striking contrast. I painted this piece in my garden studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW, inspired by a recent trip to Western Australia, where these magnificent flowers first caught my eye.
Importantly, this artwork was created using the negative painting technique, layering successive washes of transparent watercolour while preserving the light areas of the petals. Through this method, the blossom gains depth and intensity. As a result, it appears alive and full of movement. In this way, the print brings warmth and energy to any space.
This print is part of my Australian Flora series, celebrating native flowers in delicate, modern compositions. You might also enjoy Red Gum Blossom or Australian Blossom 2026 Calendar, which complement this work beautifully.
