The Round Leaf Wattle watercolour print celebrates the bright, cheerful beauty of early spring in Australia. Its golden flowers and soft grey-green leaves are inspired by the wattle tree in my garden on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
Importantly, this artwork combines traditional painting and experimental techniques. I painted the leaves using the negative painting technique, layering successive washes to preserve light and depth. Additionally, I used real wattle flowers dipped in watercolour to create the floral patterns directly on the paper. As a result, the blossoms appear fresh and lively, capturing the tree’s natural brilliance. In this way, the print conveys the joy and light of early spring in the bush.
This print is part of my Australian Flora series, exploring native flowers in modern, delicate compositions. You might also enjoy Flannel Flower 1 or the Australian Blossom 2026 Calendar, which complement this work beautifully.
